Ashley and Tom
Tom and I have a long history of running together. In fact, our second date was a long run. It was on that date that I took Tom to one of my favorite spots in the city. Olive park is a great lookout point just north of Navy pier that has a great view of the skyline and Lake Michigan. After we stopped to take in the views and share a quick kiss, I let Tom continue on his run. Ever since that second date we refer to Olive Park as our spot.
Fast forward 2 years later to New Years Eve day 2015. I thought it was just another ordinary day. Tom very causally suggested we go for a run that morning, and we had no plans for NYE that year since we both agreed the hype of the holiday is just too much for us. As we approached our spot, Tom suggested we stop to take a picture. I was getting ready to take a selfie when Tom said he’d rather get the whole skyline in the photo. He set his iPhone up in the sand for what I thought was a timed picture.
Little did I know that Tom would ask me to marry him in no less than 2 minutes. After we posed for “the photo” Tom started to tell me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. Even at that moment I still didn’t register what was about to happen. When he reached into his pocket and dropped to one knee I burst into tears. I was so happy and stunned by the beautiful ring that it took me a minute to tell him “yes!”. The proposal was such a blur of love, tears, and utter surprise. Lucky for us, Tom got it all on video so we can remember what was the happiest day of our lives. Now NYE will forever be my favorite holiday.
