Ashley and Matthew
How we met: Matt and I first met our freshman year of high school in 2007. We had several classes together but didn’t really talk to each other until our chorus trip to New York in the spring of 2008.
We didn’t officially start dating until January 26th, 2009. I had stayed behind to make up a test I had missed and he was with me because my mom was going to pick us both up. Once I was done and we were waiting on my mom, Matt asked me to officially be his girlfriend on the sidewalk beside school.
I remember being so excited to hop in the car and tell my mom, who didn’t think much of it at the time since I was only 15.
Matt and I went through our last two years of high school by each others side: getting our licenses and our first cars, going to junior and senior proms, graduating, and then finally, off to college. Matt stayed home at a community college while I went to UNC Charlotte and then he joined me our sophomore year.
How he asked: My mom had asked me the week before if I would get off work a day early and go with her to her “friend’s dinner party”.
I wasn’t suspicious at all until she told me that we could get dressed up together because it was a five star restaurant (my mom hates to dress up). I agreed to go but was still a little curious.
I arrived at my mom’s house before she came home and when she did she told me we had to get ready and go a little early because she had to drop off papers to my step brothers basketball coach (which just so happened to be at our old high school).
I didn’t think anything of it until we pulled up to the school and then it hit me so suddenly.
Of course I knew when we pulled up and saw Matt standing on the sidewalk what was happening and I started to cry before I even got out of the car.
He opened my car door, grabbed my hand and took me right to the spot where he asked me to be his girlfriend five and a half years ago.
He reminded me of that and then dropped to one knee and asked me the question I’d waited so long to hear.
