Ashleigh and Charles
How We Met: Charles and I met the summer of 2006. One of his best friends, Justin (who is now married to my sister) worked at the neighborhood clubhouse/community center which had a gym and a pool. My family and I live in Florida, so after school my mom would take us (myself and my four siblings) to the pool for about an hour. My brothers swam, but my sister and I were in high school and liked to just sit and relax with our parents. Well, Justin started talking to us all more and more. And each time we went, he paid more and more attention to my sister. One evening, we were at the pool again, sitting around a table just taking and Justin comes to hangout with us. His phone rang, so he left for about 15 minutes to talk to whoever it was. When he came back he had somebody with him. It was his best friend, Charles. Justin introduced is all to Charles, and we talked for a few minutes. They both went back inside to “get something” and while they were gone my mom kept saying how cute Charles was. And in my head I agreed. Never in my life had I see someone so beautiful. I was like, in a daze. A few minutes went by and they came back out but that’s when mom decided it was time to go home. I was so nervous to get up and walk out because I knew he was waking behind me, and well, we all know what guys do when walking behind a girl. ;) But it was weird. When I met him, I had a different feeling than I did with anyone else I ever met. I knew somehow that he was going to be in my life for a very long time, whether we were friends or something more, and part of me was hoping he was feeling the same way too. So in October 2006, a few months after we all met, my sister started dating Justin. Then in January 2007, that’s when Charles asked me to be his girlfriend! It’s always been so easy and fun with us four, since us sisters were dating best friends. Its currently December 2014, about a month away from the 8 year anniversary of when Charles and I started dating. These past 8 years have flown by, but they’ve been the best 8 years of my life so far!
How He Asked: The end of November 2013, Charles and I talked about going on a trip just the two of us, and about a week or two later we booked our plane tickets to New York! A first time for the both of us! We were so excited!! We left on December 7th and stayed for 4 nights. During our trip we stayed in two different hotels. One the first night, and the last 3 in a different hotel, and I didn’t know, at the time, where we would be staying because Charles wanted it to be a surprise!
After we landed, we went straight to our hotel so we could check in and drop off all our luggage. We stayed at Yotel the first night! A boutique hotel on 42nd street about a block away from Times Square! Now, I’m a huge city girl at heart so you could imagine my excitement being in New York for the first time with the love of my life! We checked in, went to our room and checked everything out! Charles was telling me all about the hotel and why he chose it. He said because he knew I liked boutique hotels, and Yotel had a space theme and was purple! (my favorite color!) After relaxing in the room for about an hour we decided to go back out and explore!
I forgot to mention this earlier but my sister and brother-in-law were in New York the same time on their own vacation as well, not planned! So once Charles and I walked around Times Square for a bit, and then met with my sister and her husband, and just as I thought it couldn’t get any better, it starts to snow!!! This was also a first for me! Living in Florida, we don’t get any snow, let alone any cold weather, so I was in heaven! U.S. Four walked all around NYC for hours just mesmerized by the beauty of the city. It started to get late so my brother-in-law asked us if we wanted to get dinner with them, and right away my fiancé (boyfriend at the time) said no, that we had other plans, which we did. Our hotel had a restraunt and everything on the menu sounded delicious, so prior to leaving we decided for dinner we would get food there and just bring it back to our room, and that’s just what we did!
We had our food, sitting on the floor next to the ceiling to floor windows just looking out at the city lights and watching the world out in front of us. We started to get sleepy so decided to take showers and get in bed so we could be up at a decent hour in the morning for checkout. He took his shower, then I took mine, but he kept telling me to hurry. He became very energetic and overly excited, I just assumed because we were in New York! Being there was so exciting for us both so I didn’t think twice about it. I finished with my shower, came out with wet hair, no makeup, and in my pajamas. I sat in the bed next to him and we just talked for about an hour. About all different things. Then we got on the subject of us and our relationship, and I randomly and jokingly said, “Wouldn’t it have been so cool to get engaged on our trip here?”
He looked and me with this big smile and says’ “Well, what if we really did?” Then before I know it, he’s down on the floor next to the bed, beside me, and pulls a little box out from under the bed. He starts taking about how much he loves me, at this point I’m already balling because I knew. He proposed to me then and there! What I had been joking about 5 minutes before actually CAME TRUE!!!! I was on cloud 9! We stayed up for about another two hours after that calling all our family and friends. The next morning I woke up, and reached for my hand to make sure it wasn’t just a dream. The rest of the trip I have the biggest smile on my face knowing I was going home his fiancé, a future bride!!!
I feel so incredibly lucky and blessed to be so in love with my best friend! I’m currently writing this on December 8th, 2014, exactly one year from the day he asked me to marry him! We still have yet to pick and exact wedding date, but we know for sure sometime in November 2015! And I am counting down the days!!!! When my fiancé looks at me, he look at me as if there isn’t anyone else on this earth but him and I, and I think every girl should feel the way I do. Nothing less.
