Arika and Matt's Beautiful Backyard Proposal
How We Met: Matt and I met on Lake Tapps in the summer of 2009. I was out on the lake with a friend and we saw him on the dock and I thought he was cute. He was a senior in high school and I was a freshman but I sent him a text later on and that’s basically what started it all for us. He left for Thailand shortly after we started talking but we kept in touch the whole time he was away via text messages and phone calls. When he got back, we officially started dating. We spent all of our college years together near and far, he went off to college before me and then I joined him once I graduated. Every year we just loved each other more and more. I really just remember how charming I thought he was.
How He Asked: The proposal was everything I hoped it would be. He totally surprised me! I had no idea it was coming. I was told we were going out to a birthday dinner, so my twin sister and my best friend and I met up after work and were getting ready together. They were driving and I thought we were headed to the restaurant when they made a sudden turn towards my parent’s house. They handed me a card and it was from Matt. The card explained how much he loved me and how he had been waiting his whole life for this moment. I was riding in the car as I read it and I remember looking up and seeing my twin and my best friend Brooke both sitting there crying, and I was in shock! We pulled into my parent’s house and they told me to go inside, the doors were open leading to the backyard. When I walked outside, I could see Matt standing all by myself himself in front of the water. It was such a blur after that, but he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him and I said “YEAH!” Then I looked up and saw a big group of my family and friends on our balcony overlooking the proposal and cheering once I had said yes. I was shaking so bad and my heart was pounding, it was the craziest feeling but one of the happiest moments of my life. Matt is more of a private guy and I’m a bit more outgoing and all about family, so knowing he invited everyone to be a part of it meant the world to me. I knew it came from his heart and he really put thought into what would make me the happiest in that moment. It was truly perfect.
