Areli and Scott
How We Met
Scott and I met at work about 5 years ago. I remember vividly, it was my first day and we were at a team meeting. He stood up to share a story and I immediately text my cousin saying “I found the man I am going to marry”. We had never really spoken to each other up until a few months after that. He was really quiet, so naturally, I made the first move (lol). Unfortunately, he was in a relationship at the time so I respected that. About 4 years later, after many ups and downs and both being single at the time, we decided to make our relationship official.
How He Asked
I always brought the topic of engagement up and Scott always seemed to brush it off, so I was convinced it would not be happening anytime soon. I am the hardest person to surprise so how Scott pulled this off is beyond me! He had been planning the perfect proposal with my parents and best friends for months before. He knows how important family is to me so he made sure that both my family and friends were part of the planning and occasion.
He knew I always wanted a country wedding (thank you Pinterest!) so he secretly planned my “birthday brunch” two days after my actual birthday, at a local restaurant with a country feel. He invited my closest friends and family months ahead to ensure that they would be there. I showed up to the brunch site that morning and thought nothing of it (even though there was a photographer present). Shortly after brunch and several family pictures later, my dad blindfolded me and said that he had a surprise for me. Being the control freak that I am, I asked a million and one questions not expecting what came next.
After walking for what seemed like the longest mile of my life, I was asked to remove the blindfold. As I opened my eyes I saw my friends and both of our families standing in front of me with a wooden chalkboard sign that read ‘turn around’ in beautiful cursive writing. Still not expecting a proposal, I turned and walked down a stone path to a beautiful iron bench decorated with flowers, movie tickets that Scott had saved of every movie him and I had seen together in the last 5 years, along with pictures of us from all of our trips and adventures. On the bench was also a beautiful wooden box and sign that read ‘look inside’ as our song played in the background. I opened the box and saw a note that read ‘A.C.?’ (A.C. standing for my initials with his last name). I immediately turned around to find Scott down on one knee with the most beautiful ring in his hand. Before he could even ‘pop the question’ I said “YES!”. Needless to say, this was the BEST way to ring in the new year.
