Annie + Danny | NBA Dancer Engaged in Turks & Caicos
At the beginning of 2012, Danny told me that one of his New Year’s resolutions was to plan a big trip for just the two of us. We take a trip to Boca Raton, FL every year, but he wanted to go somewhere outside of the country. So in July, we booked a trip to Turks and Caicos as a 4-year dating anniversary present to ourselves. We booked a room at the Gansevoort Turks and Caicos from September 10-15.
As the date approached, I got more and more excited, looking up local attractions and restaurants that I wanted to see while we were there. Danny didn’t have any objections to my suggestions, he just asked that we have dinner at one of the hotel restaurants on our first night. I figured we would be tired from traveling that day, so that would probably be best.
September 10, 2012: By the time we landed on the island and got settled into our room it was pretty late in the day, so we decided to take a sunset walk on the beach. As we were walking back to the hotel, I saw that they were setting up a table for two on the beach with string lights set up. I thought “How romantic!” and asked Danny if we could do something like that one night. He said “I think they only do that for couples who are honeymooning.” I thought nothing more of it, and we went back upstairs to get ready for dinner.
As we walked up to the hostess stand at the beach-front restaurant at the hotel, the hostess greeted us and said “I’m so sorry, we messed up your reservation! If you wouldn’t mind waiting at the bar, we’ll get a new table ready for you as soon as possible.”
After about 5 minutes the hostess returned to the bar and asked us to follow her to our table. She proceeded to lead us past the restaurant and onto the beach. The table that was being set up earlier was for us! We had our own private table set up on the beach, complete with a fire pit, beach bed, a private waiter, and our own private singer singing all of our favorite songs! I was in complete shock (and still didn’t suspect a thing).
After our waiter, Shaquille, took our dinner orders, the singer started singing our song, “The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra. That was when Danny asked me to give him my hand. Still not realizing what he was up to, I gave him my right hand (ditz)! He took both of my hands in his, got down on his knee, and asked me to marry him. There was a long, heartfelt speech along with the proposal, of course. I couldn’t believe it! Of course I said yes!
We spent the rest of that night on the beach that Danny had reserved for the two of us, trying to grasp what had just happened. I didn’t want that night to end. When we finally got off the beach after dinner, I Skyped my parents to tell them the good news. Apparently my parents had known for months, and my mom and Danny’s mom had been exchanging phone calls all day in anticipation for the big event. We spent the rest of the week on the island in engaged bliss!
