Anne and Rick

How We Met

Rick and I began dating when we were just 12 years old. I had a [major] crush on him- you know, the kind where I would doodle his name in my school planner, giggle anytime someone said his name, and put his name inside a bunch hearts on MSN messenger. We went to a small school, and word about who-likes-who traveled fast so he heard that I liked him pretty quickly. So, in typical middle school fashion, Rick had one of his friends ask one of my friends, to ask me to be his girlfriend during study hall. I squealed yes! And we’ve been together ever since! It’s so fun to look back at all the funny stages we went through- for example, for our first few years of dating, our parents would have chaffuer us to & from each others’ houses for our dates (seriously, bless their sweet hearts) until we were finally old enough to drive ourselves- 4 years later.

Rick and I will have been dating for almost 9 years when we get married in July, and what a joyful experience it has been to go through so many different phases of life together. A young girl’s heart is so very fragile, and Rick cared for mine in ways greater than I could have ever imagined. It often surprises people that we’ve been together all this time, but I think if you can love someone through the years of brace-faces, awkward junior high dances, and the fashion trends of 2008- your love is built to last ;)

We are continually amazed at the beautiful timing & creativity of our God. How special and rare it is to have grown up with the person I will grow old with.

How He Asked

I always thought I would see the proposal coming. I know him so well so I was convinced I would never be surprised by it- I was absolutely wrong!

We were on a vacation in St. Petersburg, Florida. It was the first night at our resort and Rick told me he already had dinner planned for us, but it was a surprise. He picked out what I should wear and was very particular about us leaving right on time (apparently he knows me well- I tend to consistently run a bit behind schedule). As we were walking to our destination, he gave in to my pleading and told me that we were going on a private sailboat charter to watch the sunset [swoon]. He also pre-ordered us a pizza to pick up and eat on the boat [Pizza on a sailboat? double swoon]. Rick always surprises me with sweet romantic dates, so I while I was beyond excited about this, I was completely unsuspecting of what was to come.

We got on the boat and met our two awesome captains, Glen & Susi. Little did I know, Susi and Rick had talked on the phone weeks before for multiple hours planning this entire thing out. The captains drove us around the Gulf and took us to their favorite spot to look for dolphins and we were lucky enough to have four adorable ones come swim and play right next to our boat. It was so incredible. Then, we began sailing out further into the gulf in search of the best sunset-watching spot. The ride was so beautiful and the weather could not have been any more perfect. The sun began to set, and Rick suggested we take a picture to remember this outrageous experience. He went to the back of the boat to grab me a sweater, and grab the camera (oh, and to grab the ring ;)).  As we were posing for our picture, Rick stopped, took my hands, got down on one knee, said some (probably beautiful and sweet and perfect) words that I can not remember and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. I was so completely and utterly surprised. To top off his amazing proposal, as if it wasn’t perfect already, another sailor saw what was happening. He drove right up next to us playing Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud, my favorite song, through his speakers.  This was the first time in my life I had ever felt so overwhelmed with joy and peace. I am a happy crier, so of course I was pouring out tears of joy. We then popped the cork of a special bottle of champagne Rick had brought for us and celebrated the entire sail home. I could never imagined such a perfect day. Praise God for this beautiful love we share.
