Anna and Nick

how we met

Nick and I first met during my sophomore year at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. We met through mutual groups of friends and eventually started dating. I was originally attracted to Nick because he was always really funny and outgoing. It was also clear that he was a very kind and generous person.

Nick and I have been dating for three and a half years. Out of the 41 months that Nick and I have been dating, we have been long distance for 30 of those months. Long distance was definitely tough, good byes were rough, and it never got easier. However, our time spent apart helped build our relationship around trust and communication. Now that we are living in the same city, it makes it that much more special. We now both live in Des Moines, Iowa and try to spend every minute with each other.

how he asked

We looked at engagement rings throughout 2015 and 2016. In February of 2016, we went to the jeweler and picked out what I wanted. What I didn’t know was that he went back the next weekend with his Dad and bought the ring. Additionally, in May, Nick drove up to Minneapolis to ask my family if he could marry me. This, again, was a secret to me. I was studying for my finals at the time and Nick told me that he was going to visit a friend for the weekend.

On the weekend of the engagement, Nick flew in our close friend and videographer Michael Crocker from San Francisco, CA. Michael flew in on Friday and stayed at Nick’s house while we stayed at my apartment that night. I had no idea that Michael was in Des Moines. On Saturday, Nick told me that he was going to golf with his Dad and a couple of his Dad’s friends while I got my nails done with Nick’s Mom, Sister and Grandma as a “welcome to Des Moines gift.” However, I found out later that Nick really went to shoot parts of the video with Michael around Des Moines.

On Sunday, Nick told me to get dressed up for a nice dinner downtown. He told me that he had received a gift card from a friend. When we arrived, Nick excused himself to go to the bathroom. Waiting in the bathroom was Michael Crocker who strapped a microphone to Nick’s chest. Nick was gone in the bathroom for about 15 minutes and I was starting to get concerned. I found out later that he took so long in the bathroom because he was sweating profusely and the tape for the microphone would not stick.

After dinner, Nick suggested that we go to the Iowa Cubs stadium to get a tour and take a cute picture because he previously was an intern there. Also, the day before the proposal, we met one of his friends at the farmers market who works for the Iowa Cubs stadium. She encouraged us to stop by the Iowa Cubs stadium to get a tour.

When we got to Principal Park, there were no cars in the parking lot. All of the stadium lights were on and I thought it was a little fishy that the front door was open. However, it still did not occur to me at this time that he was going to propose.

When we walked into the stadium Nick kept getting me to walk closer to the center of the field. I was confused why we would just walk onto the field. I kept asking, “aren’t we going to wait for your friend to meet us?” When we eventually made it to the center of the field, Nick got down on one knee and said many sweet things and of course asked me to marry him.

I am so happy he had a microphone on and what he said was recorded because I was in so much shock and couldn’t remember what he said. After I said yes, we slow danced to the song “From the Ground Up” by Dan + Shay. It was absolutely perfect, I was so surprised and it was clear how much Nick really loved me at that moment. I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with this incredible man.
