Andrew and Christine's Engagement in Isle of Skye, Scotland

How We Met

Andrew and I met in middle school and remained friends until one of our high school teachers mentioned that he thought we would be a good match. After thinking this over, when Andrew asked me to senior prom I agreed. We started dating a few weeks later, and by the end of the summer, we were off at different colleges. This began our 5-year long distance relationship, and we finally ended up living in the same city last August.

Our high school graduation in 2012 and our college graduation in 2016.

How He Asked

Andrew had been trying to get me to go on an overseas trip with him for a few years, but I always had an excuse. I had finally received my Master’s degree as well as my CPA license when I finally ran out of excuses not to go. We booked a 10-day trip to Scotland for May 2018. The trip included a layover in Iceland and site-seeing in major cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh. Andrew had purchased the ring as soon as we booked the trip and I Iearned later that he kept it with him everywhere he went during the trip. He even brought it on the plane with him. He included a note in the box explaining the “sensitive nature” of its contents just in case a TSA agent searched his bag.

On the first day of our 5-day bus tour, Andrew pulled our tour guide Yvonne aside and told her he planned to propose to me on the trip. He wanted to ask me at Loch Ness but she assured him that she could think of a better place to do it. The next day she let him know that a place called “The Lump” in Portree, Isle of Skye was the most beautiful and private spot she could think of.

Engagement Proposal Ideas in Isle of Skye, Scotland

As luck would have it, the day of the proposal was the only day of the trip that I was mad at him. We began our day with a train ride on the Jacobite Express (made famous by the Harry Potter movies) but I lost my patience with him when he couldn’t pick a spot for us to have lunch (later he told me this was because he had made reservations at a fish and chips restaurant for after the proposal and he was looking for something other than that for lunch). That night when we went back to our room I spoke for the first time that day: “I am not leaving this room tonight, not even to have dinner.” A couple hours later he convinced me to travel to “The Lump” where he got down on one knee to ask me to marry him. I only got out of bed because he promised me dinner, but obviously, it was worth it!

We are getting married in June 2019 at the hall where we had our first date: Senior Prom!
