Bri and Andrew

How We Met

Andrew and I met in February of 2008. I was a freshman and he was a senior in high school. We had an obvious connection from the very first moment we met, even though we were just kids. Quickly, we became a couple. It was a classic “first love” love story, all hearts and young love and romance. I was absolutely smitten.

As Andrew’s senior year came to a close, he applied and was accepted to UNC Charlotte. I didn’t actually take the time to think about what my boyfriend going off to college meant until it was August already. I was back home in Salisbury, still in high school. I had no idea what his new life was like and how much we could grow apart. We made it six weeks into his freshman year before we broke up. I was devastated. I couldn’t understand why we couldn’t bridge the gap.

Over the next year and a half, we both grew up. A lot. That’s the best way I know how to say it. There was never any plan that “someday” we would get back together. It was over and we had moved on. But the world has a sense of humor. A year and a half after we broke up, I found my ex-boyfriend sitting in my kitchen, hanging out with my brother. I was floored. We hadn’t seen each other or even spoken since our break up. But there he was. We sat at my kitchen table that night and talking until 2 in the morning. There were no hard feelings – our break up was necessary, we both agreed. And now, we could move on and be friends.

But soulmates can’t be just friends – obviously. Innocent texting and catching up on life turned into flirting, turned into driving halfway to meet up, and so on. That summer, we secretly got back together. We didn’t tell anyone because we weren’t even sure if it was going to work out. After three months of sneaking around, we finally started telling our friends the news – we were officially “back together.” And it just felt right.

After getting back together, we were in this for the long haul. That was never a question. Whenever we disagreed, we sat down together and talked everything out. We always pride ourselves on our communication skills as a couple. And no matter what, our relationship is more important than whatever we’re fighting about. He gave me a promise ring to wear three years later, my symbol that this was real.

Time went on and we wound up at the same college together. He graduated from UNC Charlotte and we moved into our first apartment together. Two years later, I graduated as well and we found our first house to rent.

How He Asked

FINALLY…. after seven years together, over the course of nine years, Andrew went out and bought a ring. I knew a proposal was coming – the logical “next step” after being together this long and having just finished college. Nonetheless, he still found a way to make our special moment a complete surprise! It was the Wednesday after Christmas. I was at home making baked spaghetti after a workout. He came home, I threw the spaghetti in the oven, and went upstairs to take a shower, giving him the perfect opportunity to set up. Once I was dressed, he came into our bedroom and told me he had something to show me. I followed him down the hallway to our bonus room, where he had set up a dozen roses, daisies, champagne, and a stuffed penguin (my favorite animal). He walked into the room, but I stood completely frozen in the doorway. “What is this?” He picked up the ring box and said, “It’s time.”

It most DEFINITELY was time! I was sobbing as he dropped to one knee, used my full name, and asked me to marry him. After asking him about 12 times if he was sure, if he was serious, I said YES!
