Andres and Paula's Proposal at the Lincoln Park Conservatory
how we met
Andres and I met while working at a shop together in 2008. We met on December 6, 2008 and immediately clicked. I was quiet and kept to myself, but he would always spark up conversations, from mundane things to deep conversations. On Christmas Eve, he said that he “had developed a crush on me” and we continued to get to know each other over the next few months. Before going out on our first date, he asked my mother and stepfather for approval to go out with me. It was such a unique gesture and he has remained a gentleman. Since we started “officially” dating on March 1, 2009, it has felt right and we’ve been together ever since.
how he asked
After having little time together in February due to studying for my boards, I was given an extra day off at my job. The weekend that I took my board exam, Andres told me that he needed to go into work to complete documents for an upcoming meeting. When he returned home, he mentioned that coincidentally, he had been given the same day off as me and that his work colleagues were planning to go to the Lincoln Park Zoo for a team outing.
On February 29, 2016, as we are pulling up to the zoo, a team member texts him that she is waiting in the Lincoln Park Conservatory because other team mates were running late and that there was a beautiful spring flower exhibit on display. We start walking around the beautiful conservatory, looking at and smelling the flowers.
As we are walking, Andres begins to tell me a made-up story, like we frequently do at home. He is struggling to tell me a story and I am not sure why he has decided to play this game now. He stops in front of palm trees and beautiful white flowers. As he continues to tell me his story, his tone of voice changes. At this point, I started to realize what was going on and I notice him reaching into his coat for a box.
I blank out and I am not sure of all the words in his speech. All I heard him saying was that he will always be there for me and before I knew it, he was on one knee asking if I would marry him! Of course I say yes, still in shock and disbelief about what just happened. As my senses come back, I notice a photographer (Lynzie Hazan from Bonphotage) taking pictures of us. He proposed in the most perfect way, taking into account all the little details I mentioned over the last almost 7 years!
After the shock, we walked around the conservatory a bit more with Lynzie and took photos in pretty areas, and then we went to lunch to an authentic Italian restaurant. As we were eating, I asked for all the details in the planning. He confessed to lying to me for a good while and that Lynzie had been helping him plan the perfect proposal! It turns out that he asked my boss to give me the day off since he was planning to propose. He had asked my mother for her blessing during an earlier trip to Florida and had let his mother, father, and brother know of his plans. He planned for a whole month and surprised me in the best way possible!
