How We Met

It all started my senior year of high school. I had a best friend who I went to church with and who had a younger brother, and by default since I hung out with her almost everyday, we also hung out all the time. Eventually her brother, my now fiance, and I became best friends and we went to my senior homecoming together and we were inseparable ever since then.

How He Asked

If you know me, you know that I hate surprises and I kind of make it impossible to surprise me. You also know that I have a major love for the show Friends and that my favorite episode is the one where Monica and Chandler get engaged (part2). On December 30th, 2015 I got to live out the end of that episode. But first a little back story. In July of 2015 Zech had told me that he wanted to get married the next summer and I was sooooo excited to hear that, and over the next few months I planned like CRAZY. Also if you know me, you know that I am an avid planner and it probably should be my career; I thrive off of planning. After a long 5 months of Zech and I setting a date, going to expos, and planning, I knew once his semester at Millikin was over that an engagement was coming, but I had no idea for sure when. The one thing I told Zech was that I wanted to be engaged before a dress appointment I had made at the beginning of the new year. I told you I’m a planner. After lots of questions, from me, and Zech not answering a single one, I got a text from one of my best friends telling me she was taking me to dinner on December 30th. I knew this was it but no one would confirm or deny that I was right.. Did I mention that I hate surprises?? Haha. After waking up at 5am from not being able to sleep and doing more than peoples fair share of housework and errands, by 1pm I was tired, stressed out and definitely not hungry for dinner, I was too nervous. I saw Zech that afternoon and tried to get him to tell me it was happening, and he wouldn’t let out a single detail. I know I know, I’m terrible but the stress of not knowing what was coming was driving me crazy! I went home, showered, tried to relax and waited for my friend to pick me up for dinner. Once we got downtown to eat I did everything I could to eat but my nervous tummy was not having it.. Once the check came, the nerves REALLY set it.. This is it.. I’m trying not to cry already, keeping my composure pretty well right now. But it didn’t last long. On the drive home my friend is flying down the road because she was also so anxious and nervous and was just so excited this was finally happening, only to take a detour and make me use the bathroom at the gas station down the road from my house…. In the car again, she takes off and slows down at my driveway where I see candles lining my front stairs, and the tears began to fall.. She said, “You’re going through the front door, ok? Don’t cry yet.” My response was “it’s too late it’s already happening…” As I walked up my front stairs Zech opened up my front door and I instantly started to ball; my front room was completely covered and illuminated with candles, just like my favorite Friends episode. Zech hugged me, gave me tissue, consoled me, then said these words that make me cry even now; “First of all, I’d just like to tell you that I’m incredibly excited and privileged that we get to spend the rest of out lives together. And I’d also like to say that I’m really incredibly thankful for the time we’ve had together so far, but, now I’m just more excited for what we are going to have together in the future.” He got on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. And in a teary squeaky voice, I said yes. Twice. After A hug and a kiss I hear the voice of Zech’s sister’s fiance say “Can we come in? We’re dyin out here!”- Joey’s famous line, from my favorite Friends episode. Then my mom and my closest friends and their men and Zech’s family came pouring out of my bedroom and Zech’s brother began to play the song that played at the end of the episode. It was definitely the most amazing night ever and we both can’t wait for our future as Mr & Mrs.
