How We Met

About six years ago I was at a point in my life where I was completely comfortable being on my own. I had no intention of looking for anyone, as I was very focused on school.

One afternoon, sitting in the studio of FIU’s School of Architecture, chatting with a girlfriend of mine, this guy comes in with a mowhawk, tight pants, a tight shirt, an earing and a loud personality (the complete opposite of who I am as a person). It turned out he knew my friend, as she was dating his best friend at the time, so they knew each other. I’ll never forget him sitting with us talking about the crazy night he just had thinking, “This man is crazy! He’s way too intense! Going clubbing till 6 am? No thank you! There is no way we can have anything in common.”

Boy was I wrong. Each day that semester he’d make his way to our section in the studio and we’d talk. The more we talked, the more I got to know his true self, and the more I loved it. Don’t get me wrong, he and I are very different, but we found that our values were the same. Now, fast forward six years later and I can proudly say there is no one else i’d rather spend the rest of my life with than him.

How He Asked

Marco had known for most of our relationship that Savannah is hands down one of my favorite places. I fell in love with it while visiting SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) back in college. Since we’d never been there together, this past year he’d send me cute texts saying “I just want to go on an adventure with you to Savannah, just us two!”

This past December we finally had the opportunity to go since we had planned on visiting family in Mineral Bluff, Georgia, after Christmas. The day after we arrived to Savannah, we walked from our hotel to The Paris Market for some delicious coffee. We explored all the curiosities the shop had to offer. Then he told me he wanted to take me to this beautiful park just outside Savannah’s Historic District, so we got in the car and made our way. As we approached the park we saw that the entrance gate was closed. He immediately got out to scope the site to see how we could sneak in. In this, we see a car driving toward the entrance gate from inside the park. The gates open, the car leaves, and Marco looks at me and says “go to the car and get the tripod! We’re going in!”

We had the park to ourselves, but we had to be quick, in fear security would come out and tell us to leave. Once inside, we were able to take in the beauty of the alley of canopying oak trees with spanish moss softly swaying with the rhythm of the wind. Marco swiftly sets up the tripod for a quick photo and the rest is history.

As we stood together for the “picture” he held me tight and whispered “You know I love you right?” followed by “You know I want to spend the rest of my life with you right?” At this point I stop smiling directly at the camera and face him, with a curious expression of disbelief as to what’s actually taking place. He then gets down on one knee and pulls out the ring and says “Ana Mari, will you marry me?”
