Amy and Sean
How We Met: Sean and I met in middle school, so about 10 years ago! We didn’t get to be close friends until our sophomore year of high school when he was elected the student body president and I was elected as the secretary. I had a bit of a crush on him, but he was not interested in anything but being friends. So we were! We grew super close in high school and drifted apart when college started as he chose to go to school in southern California and I was attending school in Washington still.
It wasn’t until I decided to transfer to a university that also happened to be in SoCal that things started to happen. We had only ever been close friends, so I didn’t know what to think of us dating when he asked me out. We were with a bunch of close friends out on a dock in the middle of the night, with thousands of stars in the sky. It was such a great moment, I had to say yes. The rest is history!
How He Asked: For three months, my fiance Sean had planned with my best friend a way to surprise me with an amazing proposal. He decided to have my boss plan a fake business trip to Canada for me to go on, where I would get to the airport and find that the actual destination was Los Angeles. As I got to the airport that morning with my boss and a coworker, I was given a plane ticket to LA with a layover in San Francisco. I was also given a suitcase packed with all warm weather clothing. As I got through security and to my gate, I found out that my flight was delayed. Once we finally were in the air, we ended up getting delayed even more, missing my connecting flight to LA.
I was getting very stressed out trying to find another flight to LA, but all flights were getting delayed. I was even tempted to get on a flight back to Seattle since I had no idea what was going on. By a miracle I was able to get on a flight leaving in half an hour! In the meantime, it was pouring rain in LA. My fiance was planning on proposing at the Huntington Library, one of our favorite places to visit while in school. The only issue, besides the rain, was that it was closing and I was still on a plane. He quickly came up with a new plan and everyone rushed to the new destination.
As soon as I landed, my best friend surprised me and picked me up from the airport, blindfolding me immediately. For an hour and a half, we drove through LA traffic to get the Griffith Observatory, a building that overlooks all of LA. The whole time we are driving, I can hear the rain pounding, but still have no idea where we are going. As soon as we get there, my friend took my hand, as my blindfold is still on, and led me all the way to the building and down about 3 flights of stairs. She then put my hands onto a railing and proceeded to take my blind fold off.
As soon as I opened my eyes, I was looking over all of LA, at the most beautiful sunset I had ever seen. The rain had cleared and the sky was brilliant hues of pink and yellow. I turned around, Sean was behind me, getting down on one knee and asking me to spend the rest of my life with him!
A large crowd had gathered and everyone applauded as soon as I said yes. I looked closer and noticed that all of my college roommates whom I hadn’t seen in almost a year were there as well! It was the most magical ending to a crazy roller coaster of a day! Looking back, I wouldn’t have wanted it to happen any other way.
