Amy and Frank

How We Met

When I think back to the night that I met Frankie, I never would have guessed that he would one day be down on one knee asking me to marry him! Call it fate or chance, we met through a mutual friend back in September 2012. I was down in Tucson for my medical school interview as a senior at Arizona State University, and Frankie was finishing up his last semester at the University of Arizona. I remember thinking “he is really cute,” but unfortunately it was a quick meet-and-greet with a big group of friends at a local bar in Tucson, and we went our separate ways.

About a year later, Frankie contacted me to catch up, as he was now living back in Phoenix for work and I was in my first year of medical school. I still remember how excited/nervous I was to see him again, regardless that he was fashionably late to our date (he fell asleep on the couch after a long day at work- I still have the text from him confessing this to me!). We instantly clicked that night, and the rest is history. We have been together for 4 years now. During this time, we have been each other’s rock through the ups and downs of life. Frankie unexpectedly had to have open heart surgery to replace his aortic valve only 4 months into our relationship, and I learned so much about life through his strength and positive outlook during such a difficult time. He was my support system all through medical school, and I was his cheerleader through MBA school while working full time. We both have had very busy schedules, but what was always constant in our relationship was our love and support for one another.

How He Asked

Frankie planned an early birthday dinner celebration on July 15th, and little did I know that we would be celebrating more than just my birthday! I had recently started my residency at Mayo Clinic and had an all day critical care training course the day of the dinner. I got home from work later than expected and almost asked Frankie if we could celebrate another night because I was so tired from the day. He tried to lift my spirits to make the dinner reservation. After some convincing, I caved and quickly got ready to make our reservation. He took me to a restaurant that overlooks the city with a beautiful backdrop of the desert mountains. Before we ordered dinner, Frankie mentioned that there was an outside patio with a great view, and he asked if I wanted to go watch the sunset with him. Knowing that I’m a sucker for any Phoenix sunset, I hopped out of my seat and followed him outside with a gift bag (disguised as my birthday present) he had brought to the restaurant.

On the patio, Frankie started talking about the past 3 and a half years together and as he got tears in his eyes, I slowly realized what was happening. After telling me the sweetest words anyone has ever spoken to me, he took a ring box out of the gift bag and got down on one knee. It was the most surreal moment of my life, and after the initial shock passed, I said “yes!”

Frankie hired a photographer to capture the proposal, and I love reliving the night through the pictures. The next morning was my actual birthday, and we celebrated with a brunch with both of our families!
