Amber and Clark

How We Met

My Fiancé, Clark, and I met when his best friend married my best friend. He was the Best Man and I was a Bridesmaid.  We were the two shortest people in the wedding party; so naturally, he was my escort down the aisle. Let’s be honest, it was a set-up. We both arrived a couple of days before the wedding to help our friends prepare everything, so we spent the weekend getting to know each other a little bit and he asked for my phone number before I left at the end of the reception. Unfortunately, we lived in 2 different states, 3 hours away from each other. However, he made the drive a month later to take me out on our first date and the rest, as they say, is history. He moved back to NC about 8 months ago, so we could finally live together in the same city.

Clark and Amber

How He Asked

It was a Saturday just like any other in a busy season for us. We had plans to go to a friend’s brunch graduation party and a cousin’s basketball game before spending some time together that evening. We had dinner plans with friends the night before and the next day was Mother’s Day, so we knew we would be spending our time traveling to visit with both of our families.

When Clark had mentioned the weekend before that he wanted to go to the Greensboro Arboretum, I didn’t think much of it since we try to spend time outside when the weather permits. However, he started to act a little unusual throughout the week leading up to Saturday, so I would be lying if I said that a proposal at the Arboretum wasn’t in the back of my mind. But, he threw me off and had me thinking my suspicions were completely wrong.

After the brunch, we ran errands and then Clark mentioned he wanted to wash his car instead of going to the basketball game. When he was finished, we debated about not going to the Arboretum since it was drizzling (another reason I just didn’t think it was coming), but we decided to go and then grab dinner afterwards. On the drive over, Clark seemed a little nervous, which made me a little suspicious again. Then, when we got there, I assumed we would just wander around for a little bit, but Clark knew exactly where he was going. He led me to an area with a gazebo, where we strolled around for a few minutes before ending up under the gazebo. I was just wondering why we were wandering around to check out some flowers or the other parts of the park, when he got down on one knee, pulled out the most gorgeous ring (that he helped design) I have ever seen, and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. I don’t remember exactly what he said, but I know that I will hold the memories of those moments in my heart forever.

Proposal

To add to it, after the proposal, he turned me around and told me to meet our photographer, Alyson Lawton. She had been hiding in the bushes for 45 minutes and captured the entire proposal. As a bonus, she even stayed with us to take photos around the Arboretum for an impromptu engagement session. Afterwards, we spent an hour calling our friends and family, but of course, both his parents and my parents already knew it was coming. Finally, we went out to dinner and bought a bottle of champagne to celebrate. It was a day that I won’t soon forget!
