How We Met

Jared and I met on October 8, 2018, after matching on Bumble. We’ve been together ever since!

How He Asked

Because Jared and I had designed my ring together, I’d been relatively involved in the process. I had never seen the finished product, but I did know when he picked it up from the jeweler.

That being said, I had been becoming increasingly antsy knowing he had it. This past weekend, I had become convinced that Jared was going to propose on Saturday (9/22). My mom and I went to lunch and spent the day shopping. During our time together, she took several phone calls from my dad and was texting frequently, which is incredibly abnormal for her. When I attempted to pry about a possible engagement, my mom looked at me, and informed me it “[was] not happening until early October.” I was disappointed but still felt suspicious. It wasn’t until I saw Jared later that evening that I was convinced it wasn’t going to happen.

The next day, my family, Jared, and I had planned to attend the local Greek Festival. I had resigned myself to the fact that Jared would not propose until October (like my mom had said), so it didn’t my cross my mind much during our afternoon. After arriving back from the Greek Festival, I decided I wanted to grab a popsicle and go out in the backyard to play fetch with one of my parents’ dogs for a bit. I asked Jared if it was okay with him to stay a bit, and he agreed. We walked out together and Jared casually mentioned that my parents had purchased new backyard furniture.

I turned to face where he was pointing and discovered a beautiful, hand-carved rocking bench meant for 2 people. I truthfully didn’t think anything of it, and told Jared that my dad was working to fix up the yard for any future engagement parties…little did I know what was about to happen.

Jared asked if I wanted to try the new bench out, and I agreed. As we rocked, Jared informed me that the bench we were in was actually for us. At this point, I still had a popsicle in my left hand and didn’t think anything of what he was saying. Instead, I thanked him for getting a such a unique piece of furniture for our future home, and I mentioned it was a good idea to store it at my parents.

Jared began to smile and stated “well, I wanted this bench to be a memento for us…” yours truly STILL didn’t think twice about what was going on. Realizing that I hadn’t connected what was happening, Jared said: “We’re going to watch a lot of life happen from this bench, and I want this to be a memento from the day we got engaged.” At that point, everything clicked, and I completely dropped my popsicle and began crying the happiest tears. Following his incredibly thoughtful proposal, we went back inside my parents’ house where both of our families were waiting to congratulate us. Turns out, all those calls and texts between my mom and dad were happening while Jared was setting up the bench in my parents’ yard with my dad.

Another sweet surprise was the champagne we shared. Unbeknownst to me, my dad had purchased a bottle of Dom Perignon after I was born (1990), and had been saving it all of these years for the day I got engaged. After toasting, tears, and taking some pictures, Jared went back out to the bench and signed/dated it in honor of our engagement. We decided that with every major life event or “benchmark”, we’ll sign and date our bench. It was the best day, and I can’t wait to marry the best man!
