Amanda and Ben

how we met

We met in May of 2013. Ben was in his final year of Internal Medicine residency at the University of Colorado, and I was working as a nurse in the Cardiac ICU. Ben had just started his CICU rotation and says he took notice of my kind soul and compassion for others. We bonded during late night call shifts, until I eventually worked up the courage to ask Ben out on a date. On a rare day off work, we enjoyed a perfect sunny afternoon in Denver, CO; biking, drinking, talking, and eventually sharing our first kiss! Unfortunately, I had a pending nurse contract with the UCLA Medical Center, so after only a month of dating, I moved to Los Angeles, California. Admittedly, I did not believe a long distance relationship would work between us, especially considering Ben’s demanding residency schedule. However, he surprised me with his unwavering dedication and conscious effort. He spent what little free time and money he had calling, texting, and visiting me! At the end of my 6-month contract, Ben asked me move in with him. He promised me a puppy and the walk-in closet so of course I said YES! When Ben graduated Residency, we made a pact to travel before Ben’s potential fellowship training. So we packed up and moved to Seattle for travel medicine assignments. After six months in Washington, Ben and I were ready for some sunshine so we sold all our stuff and bought a one-way ticket to Hawaii!

how he asked

After living in Hawaii for two years, Ben planned the most incredible proposal with the help of Love and Water Photography. He gifted me with a Land and Sea photo package in Maui “for my birthday.” The package included both underwater couples photos as well as coastal “land” photos. We took pictures allllll day long (even though Ben HATES getting his picture taken!)

The whole day was so special, and I didn’t think it could get better! That is until sunset, when Ben got down on one knee and asked me if these pictures could serve as “engagement photos.” Of course I said yes! Best. Day. Ever.
