Alyssa and Josh
How We Met
Josh and I met right before high school. He was taking piano lessons from my Mom so he was at my house once a week. We knew each other, but I am a year older than him and we went to different schools so it wasn’t like we were in the same crowd of friends. We did go to youth group together so we developed a friendship there. He will admit that he was interested in me first. Although, I did notice he had the most beautiful blue eyes I’d ever seen and they were hard to forget. I remember going to a bonfire at his house for his birthday. That night I think I realized just how special of a guy he was.
That same summer we started dating. I remember when Josh asked me to be his girlfriend. He said “Will you accept my heart, all the good and bad, and be my girlfriend?” I think my heart melted and obviously I said yes. We graduated from high school and moved on to college. We spent two separate school years six hours apart. To us, absence truly made the heart grow fonder. We made it through those challenges of being apart and that made it even more clear to us that we wanted to spend our lives together.
How He Asked
I am really suspicious. It’s hard to surprise me because I just figure things out. As much as I don’t want to admit it, I’m a little bit of a control freak. I’m always planning way ahead of time so therefore I make a lot of our plans. Josh does plans dates for us, but not as often. So when Josh told me he wanted to spend the day in Forest Park, I suprisingly didn’t think much of it. He just graduated from college and I figured he wanted to go to Forest Park before he started working. The plan was to have a picnic with my best friend Emily and her fiancé. Forest Park is really special to Josh and I. It’s a staple in St. Louis, where we both grew up. We’ve always loved spending our summers there: going to the Zoo, seeing shows at The Muny, and paddle-boating in the lake. We got to Forest Park and walked around for a while. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect. We went to the Zoo before setting up our picnic at the bottom of Art Hill, right by the beautiful fountains. Suddenly, Josh started walking towards the water and asked me to come over to him. I didn’t understand what he was doing but I got up to follow him. We stood right by the water and he started telling me what he loves about me. I’ll save you from hearing all the mushy stuff… but he turned and got down on one knee, asking me to be his wife. It was simply perfect.
I am truly the luckiest girl to be able to spend my life with this man. We accept each other for everything we are, the good and the not so good, and I cannot wait to call him my husband.
