Alyssa and Daniel
How We Met
Daniel and I met through a acquaintance of ours in August of 2014. Both of us, only a few months single, were not looking for a relationship. Daniel swept me off my feet the moment I met him. He was sweet and gentle, full of charisma and happiness. After meeting, we forgot to exchange phone numbers! With some help from a friend, Daniel found my number and asked me out on a official date. We went to a guided meditation that turned out to be a chanting class, embarrassing at first but is now our favorite inside joke. Daniel turned to me after our date and said “My car won’t start unless you kiss me.” SWOON. When our lips met, I felt immediately connected, I don’t know whether it was the mediating or my nerves but I felt like I’ve know him forever. Like he was already familiar to me. I think he felt it too because after our third date, we knew it was love.
How He Asked
I bought Daniel tickets to go see one of our favorite artists in Charleston, North Carolina for Valentines Day. As it so happens, his sister had just moved there so I want to use that as my ruse for the visit. Alas, I’ve always been really bad at keeping secrets so I told Daniel. I couldn’t hold in my excitement! Unbeknownst to me, he and his sister started to plan my proposal! We’re always felt connected to Mike Love because of his message of love and healing through his music. We often had daydreams about how amazing it would be if he could play at our wedding. Daniel and I talked about getting married but we never discussed when and after two and a half years, we were content with where we were. The night I was packing for our trip I just had a feeling, that still to this day I can’t describe what made me think of it, but I was hopeful that Daniel might propose. Although our lives were hectic with new business ventures and finishings of school, it just felt right. I was excited to finally get away for a little bit, even if my proposal didn’t happen, I just wanted to be able to spend some time with him. After a day of massages, good food, and quality time, we finally were preparing for the concert. Daniel seemed a little antsy and a bit distracted. I would hold his hand or try to hug him and he would move me away, trying to avoiding me feeling the ring in his pocket! We went to the show and met with his sister and some of her friends. I was eager to see Mike Love so when one of her friends slipped up and said that she was so excited for our engagement, I didn’t hear her. And good thing I didn’t!
Mike Love played a few songs and then he started talking about his wife, how hard it is to be away from her on tour and how much she means to him. He said she was truly his soulmate and that anyone who finds the love he has found is lucky. His speech was moving and filled me with love and appreciation for Daniel, my soulmate. Mike Love began playing “Distant Travelers,” a song dedicated to his wife about being destined to find each other. Mid song, Mike stopped to say that there was a contest that his fans were able to enter and the couple that won was going to receive a prize. I’m thinking, “OH NO! How did I not know about this?” Much to my surprise, he called Daniel and I onto the stage! Daniel took my hands into his and began to tell me why he loves me and, with the whole crowd screaming, he get’s down on one knee and asks me to marry him.
I said yes, OF COURSE, and it was the most beautiful moment. Us embraced, just Daniel and I together. It felt like my world had stopped, I couldn’t believe that it was actually happening. I feel like the luckiest woman in the world.
When we got off stage his parents and grandparents came through the crowd to congratulate us with phone in hand (his youngest sister FaceTimed in from college!) They flew all the way from New Jersey to see the proposal and to be there in a moment! To say it was magical is a understatement. The rest of the weekend was filled with so much happiness and love. I am lucky to have found the man of my dreams.
