Alexis and Tyler
How We Met
Our story begins in June 2013 when Tyler was drafted in the 4th round for the Chicago Cubs. I was just finishing my Freshman year as a cheerleader and Tyler was just finishing his Junior year as a baseball player at Kent State University. Both being college athletes, we had many mutual friends but were never lucky enough to be in the same spot at the same time.
When I found out Tyler was leaving Kent to pursue his dream of becoming a professional baseball player I knew I had one last chance to meet the guy I crushed so hardly on throughout my time as a Freshman. I took a leap of faith and sent Tyler a message congratulating him on the draft and he replied “Thank you I appreciate it!” but that was it.
Fast forward 2 months later and it was time for me to move back to Kent to start my Sophomore year. I tweeted that I had officially moved in and as fate would have it Tyler replied “That’s awesome you’re all moved in! When does Kent start back up?”. From this day on we have talked every day since.
When Tyler moved back to Kent for the offseason we decided it was finally time to meet in person and wanted to get lunch at Fresco’s, a delicious taco joint in downtown Kent, and then of course wanted to finish it off with some frozen yogurt. The day before we were supposed to meet Tyler sent me a text saying he had to help his sister and unfortunately couldn’t make it but wanted to reschedule. I thought, “am I ever going to meet this mysterious person” and prayed that we could at least reschedule for the next day and we did. I remember having the biggest butterflies to finally meet Tyler Skulina and I was not a person to get nervous.
At the time, I was 2 weeks post knee surgery so my entire right leg was in a brace and I was required to use crutches. I, however, knew I was about to meet the man of my dreams so decided that I was not going to use crutches but unfortunately had to wear the brace. After what seemed like eternity, we both made our way to Fresco’s and finally hit it off like the awkward and goofy people that we are. Some would call it love at first sight but we can tell you from that day on, we both knew we were meant to be together forever. The next 3 years of our relationship would be spent long distance as Tyler pursued his baseball career with the Cubs and I finished school with a Bachelors in Business Administration. The distance was tough but it has made our relationship something special and our hearts grow fonder.
Now we spend every day together in Tempe, AZ, growing with each other and being the best fur parents Reptar could ask for. The rest, as they say, is history, and Tyler purposed March 10, 2018 at the Grand Canyon.
How He Asked
Having spent a full year in Arizona we still hadn’t been to the Grand Canyon so when my brother came out to visit we decided that it was time to see one of the Worlds Natural Wonders. We decided that we would take a tour to see Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. Being the photo/nature loving person that I am I was blown away the entire time and couldn’t think of anything but how beautiful Gods creation really was and how I could capture it.
We were at the end of our tour and at this point we were able to roam all around the canyon ourselves so we went around and away from everyone to take it all in together. Tyler said, “let’s take a final picture” so I gave the phone to my brother and he took the photo. I looked at it and thought that it looked good after already taking hundreds of photos on the tour. I started walking away because the tour guide was wrapping everybody up but Tyler said, “no I don’t like that one, let’s take another”. I said, “but how? We already have a bunch of photos?” and walked back to the side of canyon to take another.
We stood there for about 10 seconds looking out at the canyon together and as we turned around to take the photo, Tyler took the ring box out of this pocket, choked up, got down on one knee, and said, “Alexis, will you do me the honor of being my wife?” THEN SHE SAID YES!!! The story is not over though. The whole time during the tour I said I wanted to bring a rock home with me for keepsake.
I picked a white one but then also really wanted a red one, the color of the canyon. However, for some reason, I couldn’t get myself to take a red one home. A lady who was on the tour with us told us after the proposal that wherever she goes she collects heart shaped rocks and for some reason she felt like she needed to get two on this tour and said “I think this was meant for you and gave it to me”. The lady had NO idea I even wanted a rock, God planned for that lady to give the heart shaped rock to us.
