Alexandra and Mathew
How He Asked
Mathew and I planned to go on a double date with friends, Jake and Kirstyn, to Two Door Tavern – one of our favorite restaurants in Williamsburg. We sat next to the open fire place, sharing wine and appetizers. Dinner wrapped up and Mathew called an Uber to bring us home. We hopped into the Uber and started to make our way home to Crown Heights. The driver stopped in front of Iris Cafe, arguably one of most charming spots in Brooklyn Heights. Mathew looked and me said, “I have a surprise for you” and then jumped out of the car and ran around to open the door for me.
He took my hand and led me to the front door of Iris Cafe. Through the windows I could see candles and flowers, with no one else inside. I followed him inside and he nudged me to look at dozens of photos set up around the room while Hozier played gently in the background. As I stepped closer to look at the photos, I noticed that they were photos from Mathew and I from over the years. He got down on one knee, surrounded by rose petals and flickering candles, and proposed.
One of my close friends and photographer, Mia Lile, captured the proposal and ran over with celebratory champagne. My knees were locked and my hands were shaky and it all felt surreal. Mathew signaled me to look to the back of the restaurant and a trap door to the basement opened up and out climbed my best friend. I almost fell over with shock! As if I wasn’t already so surprised, out came 25 of my closest friends who had all been hiding in the basement with champagne, waiting to celebrate. As “Electric Love” by BORNS blasted throughout the restaurant, we toasted, danced, and celebrated surrounded by our loved ones – including our friends from the double date, Jake and Kirstyn, who had snuck down the ally into the basement to join the rest of our friends in the surprise.
