Emily and Alex
How We Met
Alex and I met our freshman year at Western Kentucky University at a party his fraternity was hosting in April of 2013. We hit it off immediately and when it was time for me to leave with my friends, he grabbed my hand, handed me his phone and had me put my number in his phone so he could text me.
Before I could even make it out the door, Alex had texted me his full name. I immediately asked him where he was from and he said “oh, you’ve never heard of it” to which I promptly replied, “try me”.
Much to his surprise, and my own, I did in fact know the small town he was from and had been there many times, seeing as it was the exact same small town my dad had grown up in as well. Later on in the week Alex and I hung out again and have been inseperable ever since.
On May 1, 2013 Alex asked me to be his girlfriend just as our freshman year was coming to an end. That summer I went home to Lexington and Alex went home to Loretto and thus began his weekly drives to Lexington that summer and every summer after that.
In the Spring of 2015 I moved to Walt Disney World to participate in the Disney College Program for 5 months, Alex and I would FaceTime and text every spare second we had and he came to visit me on Spring Break. This was a hard time for us but it would have been a lot harder without Alex’s love and support throughout my time in Orlando.
Summer came and I moved back home and we started out senior years together and luckily enough we got to walk across the stage together to accept our diplomas. Upon graduation in May of 2016 I decided to move back to Orlando to follow my dreams of working for the Walt Disney Company.
Alex drove 13 hours from Lexington to Orlando in the middle of summer, 6 of those hours without air conditioning in my car, and thus we began our second go at long distance. Alex came in September and November to visit me and will be moving down to Orlando in December.
How He Asked
Alex and I went to The Magic Kingdom on Saturday, November 5, 2016. He insisted that we stop at the Sunglass Hut in Adventureland to look at sunglasses, while he was looking I was insisting that we go and do something instead of shop at a normal sunglass shop in the middle of Disney World.
Little did I know he was stalling because we were a little early for his grand plan. He told me he needed to use the restroom and asked me to go get us a Dole Whip, it was 10 a.m. and I was confused as to why we needed a Dole Whip that early but when in Disney anything goes.
At that point was when he ditched me and the plan came to action. I got a text from him that said “We are going to go on a scavenger hunt! This is your first clue…Let’s experience a whole new world. Throughout the last four years we’ve experience many destinations together, we have many more places to and places to see.
Go to this attraction and the genie will grant you a wish.” So I made my way over to The Magic Carpet Ride where my roommate Madison had a gift and my next clue ready for me.
My gift was an ornament and my next clue said “You asked me where I was from the first night I met you. It’s crazy to think you knew where my hometown was. Even though the world has billions of people, I’m so glad I met you.
A lot of people would say It’s a Small World. Go to this attraction to get your next clue.” So, I dried my tears, and made my way over to It’s a Small World where we met our friend Clark who had my last clue and another gift.
The gift was a mug from the ride and the last clue said “Your next clue will be found where Jimmy Cricket wishes upon a star. All the princesses can be found here. It seems like there is one missing though. Meet your Prince Charming here for your next clue.”
So the three of us made our way over to Cinderella’s Castle where Alex was waiting for me. He took my hand and walked me to the mural where Prince Charming and Cinderella are pictured, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
It was the most perfect day of my life.
I couldn’t have dreamed of a better day.
