How We Met

Daniel and I met through mutual friends in college, he was a senior and I was a sophomore. From the moment we started talking I knew he was something special. I had never laughed so hard in my life and to this day the smile doesn’t leave my face whenever he’s around. Shortly after we met, Daniel graduated and left for New Orleans to begin teaching while I stayed in Arizona to finish my last two years of school. Even with the distance, I couldn’t get this guy out of my mind and wanted nothing more than to learn more about him.

Keeping in touch over the next few months, he would come back to Arizona to visit and we made it a point to see each other whenever he was in town. After about a year, I flew out to New Orleans. We went to a party in City Park, and on the grass in the middle of the party he told me he loved me. A month later we were dating. Six months after that, we moved to San Francisco.

How He Asked

This year, for the Fourth of July, Daniel and I decided to spend the week in my hometown of Muskegon, MI with both of our families. Living in San Francisco, I don’t get to see my family as much, so Daniel wanting to do this meant the world to me. Little did I know he had ulterior motives… The first full day we were there, July 3rd, my mom planned a small party at our house so I could see all of our close friends and relatives. About halfway through the party, my older sister, Catherine, asked if I would run to the store with her to get more beer and ice for the party. Not thinking twice about it I agreed to go on what would turn into a 30 min trip just to get me out of the house.

Once we were done, as we pulled back up to the driveway of our house, I saw two of my best friends, Ashley and Megan, standing at the end of the driveway. Both excited and shocked to see them, I got out of the car to give them a hug.

They led me to the front yard where I saw four more of my best friends all lined up each holding something in their hands. As I ran from friend to friend, I read (or tried to read through tears of joy) a letter that Daniel had written detailing certain moments in our relationship.

All of them in chronological order from the first night we met, to moving to San Francisco together, and the last leading up to this moment, ending with “And while up to now, I’ve considered asking you to be my girlfriend the best thing I’ve ever done, there’s one more question I wanted to ask you while we’re here in Michigan….”

After reading the last card, I followed a trail of rose petals around the corner through the fence to the backyard where Daniel was waiting for me. My first reaction was to run and hug him but before I could do that he got down on one knee and made me the happiest girl alive.

The party, waiting in the sun room, popped out with champagne and flowers as soon as I said yes.

The day could not have been more perfect, and being able to celebrate this moment with all of my friends and family was the most wonderful experience.
