Akiko and Rob
How We Met
Rob and I met during our time attending the University of Kentucky (Go Cats!!). I was a freshman and he was a junior. On a Friday night over 5 years ago, my friend had invited me to a party that him and his friends were throwing. Rob spotted me across the room and introduced himself, we became instant friends. That night, as I was walking away to hitch a ride back to my dorm, he ran towards me to ask for my number. That was our beginning.
That fall, Rob invited me to his fraternity formal and asked me to be his girlfriend a few days later. Since then, we’ve spent almost every Friday night going on date nights, traveling the world together, and encouraging each other through school.
How He Asked
Fast forward to 2015, Rob had recently just graduated with his masters, and I with my bachelors. We both received exciting calls from Florida with offers to work for Walt Disney World. Since we have arrived here, Rob and I were working around the clock (Disney World never sleeps) and we realized that we haven’t really had time for ourselves. The time that we did get to spend with each other was always so sweet and magical. We knew more and more that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together.
For my 24th birthday, he gifted me a trip to Hilton Head Island! I was beyond excited to get to spend some time, just us. Little did I know that our trip was going be our best trip yet!
One of the days of our trip, he casually mentions that we should go to Savannah for the day and do some exploring. I’ve never been there before and it was only 30 minutes from Hilton Head Island, so why not?! At this point, a proposal was not on my radar since this part of the trip wasn’t planned.
That morning, Rob tells me that we’d be doing a nice lunch by the river in Savannah so he suggested we both look nice. When we arrived, he wanted go take a walk through the park since we had some time to spear. As we were leaving the car, he grabs a box and tells me that I can open it during our lunch. As we walked through Forsyth Park, he tells me to open the gift. In the box was a book, it was the story of our relationship and our life together.
I thought it was just a really sweet vacation gift, until the last page said, “The story for them is far from over though. Rather, it is just the beginning of all their adventures!” The next second, he’s down on one knee with the most perfect ring I could ever dream of, asking me to spend the rest of forever with him.
He had a photographer taking pictures of the whole thing with an arranged photo shoot afterwards. That day seriously could not have been any more perfect! And now, I get to stare at this ring as a constant reminder of the best guy I know, who loves me more than anything in the world. I’m so lucky!!
