Abigail and Nathan

Abigail's Proposal in Whole Foods in University Circle

How We Met

I met Nate though Ok Cupid. After a flurry of failed online dates, I was ready to throw in the towel, but I knew I had one last date planned with this guy at the Cleveland Art Museum. We met at the museum and strolled through the galleries chatting and decided to extend the date to coffee across the street. Coffee turned into dinner and dinner turned into another bar and what I though was going to be a 1 hour date turned into a whole day affair.

It’s funny because neither of us were super sold on each other and if it hadn’t been for Nate’s persistence to see me again, things probably would have ended there. We ended up spending the entire next weekend together and soon made it official and started dating.

An important story for context, he first told me he loved me about a month after dating in the parking lot of a Whole Foods. We had met there after work to get thing to make dinner at my apartment and when we walked out of the store to go to our separate cars he said “Goodbye. See you soon. I love you!” We were both a little shell-shocked and I skittered to my car wracking my brain for what to say. He showed up at my apartment 20 minutes later and I opened the door and hugged him and said “I love you too.”

We started living together after four months of dating, moved into a new apartment after living together for a year and then got a cat. We had talked about getting married after about a year of dating, so I knew it was going to happen, but had no idea when.

How He Asked

Nate was terrible at keeping the ring a secret. We looked at rings designs together and he decided he was going to have a custom ring made for me. He was so excited about it that he kept telling me things about it. He even showed me a video of the center diamond.

Our two-year anniversary rolled around and I asked Nate what he wanted to do. He volunteered to plan dinner so we could celebrate. I didn’t really think anything of it at the time. Our anniversary came around and Nate told me that we needed to go back to that Whole Foods I mentioned above because someone told him that there was a bottle of wine there that we had been looking for. I got ready for the evening not really thinking anything of it and assuming that we were getting a bottle of wine to celebrate after dinner.

I was trying so hard to not get my hopes up about him proposing but it was in the back of my mind. He slightly tipped me off when he refused to take a picture together before we left and when he took longer than usual to come downstairs after I was ready to go.

We drove over to the Whole Foods on the other side of town and headed back to the wine section. He seemed a little flustered so I asked if I could help him find the wine. He asked me if I remembered that night when he accidentally said “I love you” and I started wracking my brain trying to remember what wine we drank that night almost two years ago. He kept talking and said “That night it was an accident that I said ‘I love you’ but I want to be very clear that it’s not an accident now and I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. So will you open this box?” He pulled the ring box out of his pocket and I opened it to see the most stunning ring ever. I felt my breath catch and he asked me to marry him.

Of course, I said yes and we left the Whole Foods to go to dinner. I Facetimed my mom to tell her and she asked us where we were going for dinner and I said it was a surprise. She said “Oh right! You’re meeting your sister and her boyfriend!” Nate was less than pleased that the surprise was spoiled but I had no idea what he planned. We get all the way back home and he gets me out of the car and we start walking to an area that doesn’t have a ton of restaurants. We turn the corner to our local butcher shop/grocer and I thought we were going in to tell the owner, who we are good friends with, that we got engaged. I walked into the shop and standing there are a ton of our friends and family. I cried and was basically stunned into silence. Nate had planned a whole engagement party for us! It was such a great night with friends and drinks and great food and honestly the best way to celebrate such a huge moment in our lives.
