Abby and Nathaniel
How We Met
Nathaniel and I have been friends for many years. We met in a club based out of the YMCA when I was a freshman and he was a junior. We quickly became great friends and always cared deeply for one another. Despite Nathaniel expressing his feelings for me, and me knowing deep down that I reciprocated those feelings, we never pursued a relationship as teens (which was probably for the best!) We both dated other people and went our separate ways. It wasn’t until we had both been out of high school for a couple years that we reconnected and decided to take a chance. I’m thankful that our story happened on the timeline it did!
How He Asked
Nathaniel proposed on New Years Eve and he set up the whole day so perfectly. He flew my best friend, Emma, in from Texas and she spent the day driving me around to different locations. Stop #1 was at Nathaniel’s work. I saw him and he handed me a letter but didn’t say much else. I opened the letter and it explained that I would be spending the day with my friend going on a journey. In the letter he said that this first stop was significant because its where he asked me to be his girlfriend. After that Emma and I went to get our nails done – such a smart guy! Stop #2 was at the dance studio my family owns and where I work. I found a letter there, too. That letter explained that this place is significant because it is where we first said “I love you” to one another, and also where I am able pursue and share my passion for dance that Nathaniel will always support me in. Stop #3 was at a coffee shop in between our houses. Our favorite barista, James, handed me a letter that explained that this stop is significant because we spent a lot of time here together – laughing, crying, fighting, confessing feelings, and so many unforgettable conversations. (This place has since closed :( We miss it so much!) The letter also said that there was one more stop on our journey, so I needed to go home and get dressed for our New Years party. We went home and Emma coached me on what to wear and how I should wear my hair. Then we headed out to our last stop. We arrived at the YMCA where Nathaniel and I first met. She drove me out to the back of the camp property where we found a pavilion lit up with twinkle lights and candles and a handsome man waiting for me to join him. It was in that spot that Nathaniel got down on one knee and asked me to be his WIFE!!!! I couldn’t say “yes” fast enough. After that, we went to our New Years Eve party which turned out to be our surprise engagement party. It was the sweetest day of my life!
